Thomas Bryan
Birth: Jan. 21, 1882
Death: Oct. 13, 1945

World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Bott Lane, England, he served as a Lance Corporal in the 25th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, British Army. On April 9, 1917, during the first day of the Arras offensive at Vimy Ridge near Arras, France, Lance Corporal Bryan although wounded, went forward on his own to view a machine gun which was inflicting much damage. He worked up most skillfully along a communication trench, approached the gun from behind, disabled it and killed two of the team as they were abandoning the gun. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross by King George at St. James's Park, Newcastle on June 17, 1917. Due to his injuries, he was discharged from the Army in September 1918, returned home where he worked in the mining industry, until he had to give up his job due to his war wounds. He died at the age of 63 in Doncaster, England. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
