Major League Baseball Player. For seven seasons (1950 to 1952 and 1955 to 1958), he was a left-handed pitcher with the St. Louis Browns, Washington Senators, Kansas City Athletics, Milwaukee Braves, Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles. Born Louis Mortimer Sleater, he attended St. Joseph's High School in Baltimore where he first made his mark on the baseball diamond and during his collegiate years at the University of Maryland he continued athletic excellence. Signed by the Boston Braves as an amateur free agent in 1946, he was briefly a part of the Chicago Cubs' and New York Giants' organizations, prior to being claimed by the Browns with whom he made his Major League debut on April 25th, 1950. His most accomplished season was while with the Senators, when he produced a career-high 4 wins with a respectable 3.63 ERA in 1952. In 1957, he yielded a career-high 41 games pitched in a reliever role utilizing the knuckle-ball primarily. In 131 regular season games, he compiled a 12 win 18 loss record with a 4.70 lifetime ERA in 300 innings pitched. After retiring from baseball, Sleater worked as a steel salesman in Pennsylvania. (bio by: C.S.)
