Apollonia Welk was born in Selz, Kutschurgan District, Odessa, South Russia, (which now is in Ukraine) to Johannes Welk and Marianna Schweitzer. [Johannes Welk was brother to Ludwig Welk, father of famous band leader Lawrence Welk].

Apollonia married John Usselman in 1899 in Selz, and they sailed from Bremen, Germany and arrived in New York, USA, on Nov. 23, 1900, bringing their 4 yr old daughter, Marianna.

They settled in Strasburg, North Dakota. Two more children were born: Martin and Barbara.

In Spring, 1907, the family moved north to Canada and settled in the village of Allan, Saskatchewan. Son, Anton, was born in 1909.

In 1913, the family moved to a farm near Dundurn, Saskatchewan. Olga (Agatha) and Katherine were born there.
