She was born in Russia, according to her death certificate. Her father's name was recorded as Max Taunt on the record. Information was given by her husband Joseph who survived her.

On Tillie's son Leo F. Forbstein's death record on the California Death Index, his mother's maiden name was recorded as Tand, close to what was on Tillie's own death record.

Tillie's mother's name was not known for her death certificate.

There were some people by the name of Tande, similar to Tillie's father's surname, who turned up in Norway. There may have been a family from Russia who stayed in Scandinavia after leaving Russia, perhaps some of Tillie's family.

Tillie and her young daughter Mary apparently stayed in Sweden for about 3 years while her husband went on to St. Louis, Mo., to get settled there.

In some of the later census records for her children, Tillie's birthplace was recorded as Sweden, though if she was born there, it was to Russian parents most likely.
