Thomas Hirst, 77, Expires
Today of Injury Yesterday When Hit by
Limb of Tree.

Thomas Hirst. 77, prominent in
Masonic orders and a retired Watervliet
Arsenal worker, died at his
home, 1105 Twenty-fifth Street, at
7:15 a.m. today as the result of a
fractured skull sustained yesterday
when he was struck by a limb of a
tree.
According to a report filed with
the Watervliet Police, through
Sergt. Robert M. Conlen and Patrolman
John V. McNamara, who
conducted the investigation, the
elderly gentleman was standing beneath
a tree in the rear of his yard
and the limb which was being
sawed by a young resident of the
city fell directly on his head. The
accident occurred at about 3 p.m.
yesterday.
Dr. Clayton I. Gifford was summoned
and arrived on the scene a
few minutes after the accident.
Later Mr. Hirst was treated by Dr.
Eugene Hanratta. He was injured
so badly that the physicians did
not permit his removal to a hospital.
Coroner Edward W. Spillane was
called to the residence shortly after
the injured man expired today
and with the coroner's physician,
Dr. Henry F. Albrecht, gave a decision
of accidental death due to a
fractured skull.
Mr. Hirst was born in England
and there married the former Ellen
Barlow. The couple came to this
country on their honeymoon about
fifty years ago and had resided
here ever since. Mrs. Hirst died
about 11 years ago.
He was a prominent mason and
was a member of the Hudson River
Chapter, Evening Star Lodge, Bloss
Council and the Masonic Veterans,
all organizations connected with
the Watervliet Masonic Temple. He
retired from the Watervliet Arsenal
in 1925 and was a member of the
twenty-year club of the arsenal.
He is survived by one son, J.
Harold Hirst; one daughter, Miss
Nellie Hirst; a granddaughter, Marjone
Hint, all of this city and one
brother, Daniel Hirst of Mechanicvilie.
The funeral will be held privately
at 2 p.m. Saturday from the residence
and at 2:30 p.m. from the
First Baptist Church, of which he
was a prominent member, where
Rev. Arnaldo Natino, pastor, will
officiate. The latter will be assisted
by Rev. William J. Clark of
the First Presbyterian Church,
Masonic services will follow.
Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery,
Troy, wher» Mr. Natino will officiate.
