My Dad's sister lived next to Uncle Wendell and Aunt Harriet for my entire childhood on Lake Street in Hammond. As children, we would visit from Pennsylvania during the summer. I remember always stopping by and she would have snacks and drinks for us and then send us off to play. Hammond was a great place to come to during the summer and we would roam the streets and attempt to climb the water tower (although we always chickened out about half-way up). Aunt Betty just used to say that she wasn't climbing up to get us if we were too scared to come down on our own. Her husband Sam, used to let us talk with his friends around the world on his short-wave radio that he had set up in a spare bedroom. We played kick the can and ball tag until way after dark with our cousins and then would fill her house with dirt from our shoes. I never remember her being angry at us for making a mess or creating dishes for her to wash. In her later years, she developed severe alheizemer's and couldn't remember who we were when we visited. We hugged and kissed her anyway and explained how we were related to her. She took it well in stride until the end. She was a member of the Hammond Church of Christ and I will always remember her as a kind lady who did her best to help anyone who needed it.
