World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Geelong, Australia, he served as a Captain in the 12th Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces. On April 7, 1917, Captain Newland organized an attack by his company on an important German objective at Bapaume, France. He personally led a bombing attack under heavy fire, rallying his men who had suffered heavy casualties. The following night his company was holding the captured position under a heavily counter-attacked, but Captain Newland succeeded in regaining it. Later on April 15, at Langnicourt, France, when one company was overpowered and his own was attacked from the rear, Captain Newland drove off several combined attacks and encouraged his men to hold out until relieved. For most prestigious gallantry, he was promoted Major and awarded the Victoria Cross on June 8, 1917. Remaining in the Army, he served in the World War II as a Lieutenant Colonel quartermaster instructor at the 4th Division Army Headquarters in Melbourne. He died suddenly of heart failure at the age of 67 in Caulfield, Australia.
