Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He entered the Confederate service in 1861 as a Captain in the 38th Tennessee Infantry and displayed courage leading his company at the Battle of Shiloh. His promotions through the grades were rapid to Colonel in command of the 51st Tennessee. At the battle of Murfreesboro, he charged Federal troops capturing prisoners, cannons, small arms and wagons in the victory. In 1863, he led his regiment with skill at Chickamauga, the Battle of Missionary Ridge and at Charleston, Tennessee. After particapating in Atlanta Campaign, he was promoted Brigadier General in July 1864 and was in command of a division at the engagement of Jonesboro in September. At the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864, as he led his brigade against Union fortifications, he fell mortally wounded in the charge and died 10 days later.
