The Harrow Families

(Asa Harrow's) son, Joel F. Harrow popularly called Fletch Harrow continued to one of the active, stable and energetic citizens of the Mattole Valley until he himself died in the autumn of 1930.
Fletcher Harrow was born in the state of Iow, in 1859. He was brought in the valley as an infant in the summer of 1860. He grew up in the vicinity of Petrolia with meager opportunities for an education.
He was in his youth, a conspicuous individual in every grain threshing crew, sheep shearing crowd so almost any force of working men. He was a hard working and industrious man whereever he was placed.
He had a strong religious inclination and in his youthful days was a perminent figure in religious revivals, but he said it was hard for him not sometimes "fall from grace."
About the year 1885, he married Miss Kate Titus, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.M.G. Titus of Petrolia. He reared a family of several children, and for a number of years resided with them in Petrolia, but in the early 90's established a home on Wilder Ridge and later located for himself a homestead claim on the north side of the Mattole River about four miles north of the Ettersburg Post Office. Here Harrow proved himself to be a specialist in hog raising, as well as in other kind of stock production.
For many years Harrow worked as a claim or land locater. As such he located many land-seekers on home steads and timber claims.
For a number of years he was a school trustee in the Wilder district, near Ettersburg. Though not of Irish extraction, Harrow was richly endowed with wit. Any man who tried to crack a joke on Harrow had to watch his step or he would find the joke on himself.
The writer who was an old personal friend of Fletcher Harrow can vouch for the fact that the latter was the most successful joker and mimic he ever knew.
Fletcher Harrow passed from life in the autumn of 1930 and was deeply mourned by the whole community. His children reside at his old home.
