My great-great grandfather Eli did not have an easy life. He was born in 1935 to an unwed mother and we will probably never know for sure who his father was. His mother died in 1839 and by the time he was 5 his step-father had placed him in a work house to live (he's on the 1841 census in the work house). I could not locate him on the 1851 England census so I'm not sure how long he was at the work house. He married Mary Ann Merchant Sept 25th 1860. They show up on the 1861 England Census and then by 1870 they are in the US with their twins, Sarah and William who are 7.
