Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 143rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. During the fighting around the McPherson Farm on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1, 1863) he commanded his brigade (1st Brigade, 3rd Division, I Corps) when the the previous commanders were wounded and put out of action. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on July 26, 1865 for "meritorious services".
