Susanna was the daughter of J Rutsen and Susan Schuyler of Bergen Point, New Jersey.

She married Nicholas Murray Butler who became president of Columbia University.
"She was a woman of rare attainments, active in religious and philanthropic work with a large acquaintance of friends. Her death was a shock to all although she had been ill for some time which affected her heart. She passed away at her home at 119 East Thirtieth Street, New York. The board of trustees at Columbia University suspended all exercises there so the faculty and officers could attend the funeral which was held at St George's Church in New York City."
