Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as a Captain in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in August 1861, and by July 1863 had rose to Lieutenant Colonel (sustaining a wound at the Battle of Antietam along the way). On the 2nd day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 2, 1862) he assumed command of the regiment when Colonel George H. Ward was mortally wounded near the Codori House on Emmittsburg Road. He was commissioned the unit's Colonel after the battle, but was never mustered in at that rank. During the Novembert 1863 Mine Run Campaign he was captured by Confederate forces, and was confined in three different Southern prisons before being paroled on August 3, 1864. Six days later he was honorably mustered out of Federal service.
