Thelma Juanita Rose Coon, 93, of Gothenburg, formerly of Brady, died Aug. 24, 2002, at the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital Long Term.
She was born Jan. 10, 1909, at Farnam to Walter and Ada Luella Wear Rose.
On May 21, 1929, she married Edward J. Coon. She managed a cafe, "Poor Old George's," in the 1930s. She was also known for painting and hanging wallpaper. She was the first hot lunch cook at Brady School. She also had a beauty shop for 20 years. She was also a wonderful seamstress and child caregiver. She was known as the "noodle lady."
Mrs. Coon joined the Farnam Methodist Church as a teen and transferred to Brady in 1945. She was a very active member. She also belonged to United Methodist Women and a Bible study.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverly (Eugene) Hoaglund of Brady; four grandsons, Timothy (Gayla) Coon of Hitchcock, Texas, Richard (Linda) Hoaglund and Jeffery (Sally Jo) Hoaglund, both of North Platte, and Patrick (Julie) Hoaglund of Brady; 14 great-grandchildren, Vanesa (Jerry) Lindsay, Michael Coon, Christopher Coon, Corey Hoaglund, Casey (Becky) Hoaglund, Jessica (Tim) Johnson, Jeanie (Alex) Roeder, Jennifer Speck, Kim (Brian) Flanders, Kerri Ross, Jason Ross, Lindsay Hoaglund and Kelli and Tiffany Hoaglund; eight great-great grandchildren, Ashley and Cheyenne Lindsay, Akilah and Kaden Ross, Karli and Jaeli Flanders, Chloe Hoaglund and Bailey Roeder; many nieces and nephews; and a daughter-in-law, Margaret Coon of Alvin, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband June 1, 1966; a son, James; a grandson, Michael Coon; her parents; three sisters, Wilma Heilscher and two infant sisters; and two brothers, Earl and Merle Coon.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church of Brady, Brady Rescue Unit or Gothenburg Memorial Hospital Long Term Care.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church at Brady with the Rev. Bill Bicket officiating.
Inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Farnam Cemetery.
Blase Memorial Chapel of Gothenburg is in charge.
