Professional Football Player. For ten seasons (1959 to 1968), he played at the tight-end position in the Canadian and American Football Leagues with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Los Angeles/San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins and Oakland Raiders. Born David Allen Kocourek, he attended J. Sterling Morton High School in Illinois and played collegiate football at the University of Wisconsin. Selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 19th-round of the 1959 NFL Draft, he opted to play for Winnipeg of the CFL. He joined the Los Angeles Chargers of the newly-former American Football League in 1960 and had an immediate impact on the league. Additionally, he was a contributor to the Chargers' squad for which appeared in the first AFL Title Game (1960). Following the Chargers' relocation to San Diego, Kocourek established himself as one of the league's top receivers and experienced the first of four consecutive Pro-Bowl honors (1961 to 1964) in 1961. Additionally, he earned a stellar reputation as a blocker. In 1961, he yielded a career-high 55 receptions and topped the 1,000 yards gained with 1,055. In 1963, along with Paul Lowe, Keith Lincoln and Lance Alworth, he formed an elite receiving core for which propelled San Diego to the AFL Title that year. He move onto the Dolphins in 1966 and has the distinction of being a part of Miami's roster during their inaugural season. During his years with the Raiders (1967 to 1968), he was a contributor to Oakland's run at the 1967 AFL Title for which culminated with an appearance in Super Bowl II (1968). After retiring as a player, he had a stint as a broadcaster and later moved to Florida where he worked in the real estate industry. During his last years, he suffered from dementia most likely as a result of his football career and succumbed from complications.
