Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War in the 110th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, rising from 1st Lieutenant of Company B to Colonel and commander of the regiment. He was mortally wounded while leading his men at the May 12, 1864 Battle of Spotsylvania, Virginia. He was shot in the right thigh, which had to be amputated. He lingered from his wound in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he eventually died 10 days later.
