Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War in the 57th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, rising from Captain of Company A to Colonel and commander of the regiment. He led the unit at the Battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the Wilderness. Wounded twice during his service, he was discharged due to disability from those wounds on November 28, 1864.
