Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. When Texas entered the Confederacy, he was elected to the State Secession Convention in 1860 and cast his vote to take Texas out of the Union. At the start of the Civil War, he was commissioned Captain of the Lonestar Defenders and helped organize the Texas 3rd Cavalry. In February, 1862, he received an appointment as Brigadier General in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States and was ordered to report to General Benjamin McCulloch's Army of the West in Fayetteville, Arkansas. In April 1862, he was given command of a brigade and was transferred to Mississippi, to prepare for the Corinth campaign. During the Siege of Corinth, he contracted dysentery and died on May 16, 1862. His son James Stephen Hogg, was the 20th Governor of the State of Texas.
