Educator and businessman. He was an innovator in the production of premium vanilla extract in the United States. Vanilla extract was previously imported from France and made by processes which were proprietary secrets. Burnett was also a manufacturer of pharmaceutical products and foods and the family remained in business for over a century. He was the founder of St. Mark's School, an Episcopal boarding school. 

Joseph Burnett, son of Charles and Keziah Pond Burnett of Southboro, married Josephine Rebecca Cutter, the daughter of Edward and Ruth Torrey Cutter of Boston. They were married March 20, 1848 at Church of the Advent in Boston. They had 12 children:
