She married Feb. 16, 1888, in Talladega County, Alabama, Floyd Smelley, son of Bridgers Smelley and his first wife Mary Hawkins Smelley. Laura Blackmon Smelley and her eldest son Adam are said to have died of Tuberculosis on the train to Ft. Stanton, New Mexico, where they were going for their health and buried at Willard, N.M., though the death certificates indicate they may have died on the train returning from there.

Her younger children rode the train all night with their mother's and brother's bodies.

These records are perplexing as they indicate that the Smelleys died at Talladega rather than on the train in New Mexico as previously reported. It is thought that these records were generated in Talladega County at the time that their deaths were reported back in Talladega County.
