Walter and his wife, Gladys, their one year old son, Guilford, and their unborn son were all victims of the Spanish influenza epidemic in Chicago between the years 1918-1919 - one of the deadliest epidemics in history. Their other son, Walter Hiram Strom, Jr., and Gladys' father were also very ill, but survived. Walter Jr. was raised by his grandparents, Guilford and Caroline Wood.
