Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A lawyer and adventurer pre-war, he began his Civil War services as Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Kansas Volunteer Infantry. Upon muster out of that unit he joined the 2nd Kansas Volunteer Cavalry, being commissioned Major. He was later transferred to the 14th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry, where he rose to Colonel and commander of the unit. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on February 13, 1865.
