George Michael Leader
Birth: Jan. 17, 1918
York County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: May 9, 2013
Dauphin County
Pennsylvania, USA

Pennsylvania Governor. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 36th Governor of Pennsylvania from 1955 until 1959. One of seven off-springs, his father was proprietor of a successful poultry business and served as a state senator. George aspired to become a teacher and studied at Gettysburg College prior to transferring to the University of Pennsylvania where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1939. When his father became ill, George helped run the family business and following the Unites States' entry into World War II, he enlisted with the Navy. He served on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific and upon his return home, with the aid of the G.I. Bill, he was able to receive finances to purchase a small poultry farm in his native York, Pennsylvania. He developed an interest in the political arena, initially in York as he went onto become county chairman. When his father chose not to run for re-election, he succeeded him as state senator. He was elected governor in a landslide for which was surprisingly so for a Democratic with the popular of the Republican Party at a high. His accomplishment earned him the cover of Time Magazine. During his tenure, Leader fought passionately to implement and improve programs for the handicapped and mentally-challenged. Additionally, he worked toward reducing the unemployment rate and was a proponent of environmental causes. After leaving office, he founded along with his wife Leader Healthcare Organization for which was designed to provide quality care for nursing homes and rehabilitation center. (bio by: C.S.)

I wonder if you are any relation to the Mary Reader who was a pioneer woman's journalist back during the Civil War times. Her newspaper was over in Hanover just fifteen miles away. May you rest in peace, sir.
