About 1846, John married Eliza Murphy in Ireland, and they emigrated from Ireland to America with their first-born infant son, James.
On 4 Aug 1862 John mustered into service with Company A of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Worcester, Massachusetts. He gave his occupation as painter and was 45 years, 2 months and 6 days old.
On 7 Aug 1863 John transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps, 7th Company, 1st Batallion. He ended his military service on 2 Oct 1863.
After his death Eliza O'Regan received a widow's pension on 6 Feb 1879 based on John's service, certificate number 191,979.
