U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1843 and commenced to practice law in Somerset, Ohio. He was a member of the Ohio State Senate in 1851, a delegate to the Whig National Convention in 1852 and again a member of the Ohio State Senate in 1861. In 1863, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-eighth and Thirty-ninth Congresses, serving until 1867. He was again elected as a Democrat to the Forty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Hugh J. Jewett, serving (1874-75). After his term, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 78.
