Frank P. Blatnik, 90, of Duluth died Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at his residence after a brief hospitalization last year and short illness.

He was born Feb. 24, 1914 in Chisholm to John E. and Margaret (Kochevar) Blatnik (Slovenian immigrants from Austria-Hungary). Frank married Dorothy B. Kochendoerfer of Winona Oct. 2, 1937 in Decorah Iowa.

Frank's public working life included times as a Works Education Instructor for the WPA. He also taught school in St. Louis County in Alango and Alborn. Frank served as principal in both Clover Valley High School and Cherry High School. He was a Personnel Director for St. Louis County in Duluth for nearly 20 years prior to becoming the Duluth Postmaster. Frank was widely recognized for his stimulating and challenging tenure as Duluth Postmaster from 1965 until his retirement in 1978. A devoted civic servant, he was a member of NAPUS (National Postmasters), NARFE (Retired Federal Employees), AARP, St. Louis County Historical Society(Board of Governors), Duluth Teachers Credit Union (Board of Directors), Senior Citizens Coalition, Duluth Visitors and Convention Bureau, Lakeside Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon, NAACP, Red Cross and the American Legion.

Frank enjoyed fishing, gardening and was a recognized woodworking craftsman. Known as the consummate gentleman, more than a home on the dance floor, many knew his gift of grace and too, shared his skill in repartee. With his generations' tireless work ethic, he was a great servant of the people, and often championed those who had no voice.

Frank is survived by his loving family including his wife of 66 years, Dorothy; children, Brian (Janet), Barbara, and Michael; and numerous grandsons, granddaughters, and great-grandsons.
