On 28 Jul 1864 William ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts having fulfilled his term of service.
William Ronan married Catherine McMahon, daughter of Patrick and Catherine (Breen) McMahon. They had at least seven children.
Kate Roonan was enumerated as the widow of William Ronan, of the 15th Massachusetts, in the 1890 Veterans' Schedules of the US Federal Census in Jun 1890 at Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, stating that he had died three years previously.
Catherine, his wife, outlived William and died on 8 Jan 1902 at Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts.
