Captain Renshaw was born in Plymouth where he conducted a large livery, ice and coal business, besides operating the two steamboats (Mayflower and Wilkes-Barre) on the Susquehanna River. After leaving Plymouth with his family, he resided on his farm in Dallas for about twelve years and for the last four years lived in Dorranceton.

He was the father of eight children:

Charles
Cecelia Blanche, died in 1919
Theodore Raymond, died in 1897
