Army Sgt. Mitchell was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Infantry Division, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, Fort Stewart, Georgia. Mitchell was the driver for the brigade's operations officer. He died instantly from the blast of a missile's 2,000-pound warhead, which hit a few yards away and spit out an enormous fireball that engulfed much of the command post compound. Seventeen soldiers were wounded. George was on the phone with his wife, Brenda Sue, just half an hour before the Iraqi rocket killed him, laying out plans to become a police officer. "He jokingly asked me if I could put up with him in the police force, and I joked back that I'd put up with him in the Army," said Brenda. Mitchell served six years in the Army after high school and had re-enlisted in 2001, shortly after their second child was born. He loved the Army life, the camaraderie. He leaves behind a wife, a daughter 3 1/2 years old and a son 2 years old. He also has a 10-year-old son by a previous marriage. George loved his children very much and was proud of every accomplishment they had no matter how big or small. His love for the outdoors got him involved in landscaping, gardening, and hunting. He was a member of the Western MD Gun Dog Association where he proudly displayed his Beagle Dogs alongside his father.
