William was the son of David and Elisabeth Ruxton, of Edgehill farm, Foveran, Aberdeenshire, which is located about 10 miles north of Aberdeen. William's father David was a tenant farmer for many years for the estate of Tillery, which is just to the north of Edgehill.
William Ruxton married Elizabeth Gellan on 1 Jun 1823 at Logie Buchan, Aberdeenshire.
Their first four children were baptised at the Parish of Foveran between July 1826 and Nov 1833, and the parish register entries for all four give his residence as Burnside, located just to the east of the estate of Tillery (where William was likely a tenant farmer or agricultural labourer).
It is believed that they came to Ontario, Canada in 1836, where he settled on leased land in the village of Winterborne, Woolwich township in Wellington County.
He initially took over 100 acres of land, which he began to clear, but in 1839 his part of the farm is shown as 6 acres of cleared land and 44 acres wild land. The remaining 50 acres were now being farmed by the family of his bother-in-law William Harvey.
He was clearly a successful farmer, as at some point around 1848 he moved to a new farm in Winterborne, on the other side of the Grand River. He purchased this farm in 1858.
Some time after 1871 he and his wife Elizabeth moved to Southampton, in Bruce County, where they both died in 1878.
