He was born January 14, 1915 in Stokes County to the late Jarvis Kennon & Ida Smith.
Mr. Smith's father, the late Jarvis Kennon Smith, Sr., founded Smith Guano and Hardware Co. in 1929. Later, following his father's death in 1966, Mr. Smith co-owned Smith Hardware with brothers Raymond and J.K. Smith, Jr., eventually becoming sole owner and operator of the business. Another brother, Al Smith, owned and operated Al Smith Appliance in the same block as Smith Hardware. A nephew, Freddy D. Smith, following service in the Army, participated in the operation and later ownership of the store through his father, Raymond Smith.
Roland Smith was in the 1939 video of Pilot Mountain, was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed playing in earlier years.
Mr. Smith was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Pilot Mountain (316 E. Main Street, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041) since 1948 where he had served as an Elder. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and wore the NRA hat proudly. He will be missed greatly by his family, friends and customers.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sherri Jo Smith Collins & Paul Steven Collins of Pilot Mountain; son, Roland Wilson Smith Jr. of the home; grandchildren, Carrie Elizabeth Collins and Daniel Joseph Collins; nephews, Freddy D. Smith and Kenneth A. Smith, both of Pilot Mountain; sister-in-law, Hazel Smith of Francisco; and other relatives. He also will be missed by his caregivers, Fran Winters, Brandi "Red Bird" Rose, Daniel Collins (grandson), Joe Shelor, Donah Dodson, Cathy Kippe, Donnie "Waterman" Riggs and Chrystal Lawrence.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by, in addition to his parents, his wife of 56 years, Foye Elizabeth Cook Smith; sister, Irene Badgett; and brothers, Raymond Smith, Al Smith and J.K. Smith, Jr.
The funeral will be Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Pilot Mountain, conducted by Rev. Kristi Rolison, Rev. Allen Morrison and Paul Collins.
Procession to the committal service will be Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Pilot Mountain, going to Skyline Memory Gardens (432 Old Buck Shoals Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030) for an 11:00 a.m. service.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday at the church from 6 p.m. until time of service, again after the service from 8 p.m. until 9 p.m and at other times at Mr. Smith's home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church Music Fund/Pipe Organ Fund, P.O. Box 1209, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041.
