Civil War Confederate Brigadier General, US Congressman. Upon the admission of the Territory of Kansas to representation in 1854, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third and Thirty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1857. At the start of the Civil War, he was a Kansas land register agent, when he was commissioned a Major in the 27th Texas Cavalry in 1862. Known as Whitfield's Legion, he was promoted Brigadier General in May, 1863 and commanded the Confederate cavalry troops stationed in Arkansas. After the war, he engaged in agricultural pursuits and was a member of the Texas State House of Representatives.
