The last of the French Carolingians (descendants of Charlemagne) and nephew of the last Carolingian King Louis V (the Useless), who died childless in a hunting accident. Considering himself the rightful heir, he fought against Hugh Capet, whom several nobles had elected king. He was captured at Laon 30 Mar 991 with his wife and children and taken to Senlis. He remained a prisoner in Orleans until his death. He was buried in Maastricht in 1001.
