Mr. Avery was born the son of John Paul Avery and Sefronia Elizabeth "Dixie" Lea Avery. He retired from Hercofina in 1986 and went on to operate Quality Homes in Hampstead for over a decade. He was a 32nd degree mason, a member of Orient Lodge # 395 A.F. & A.M. in Wilmington, the Wilmington Valley of the Scottish Rite, and the Sudan Temple of New Bern, NC. His love of family history led him to hold membership in many organizations including the: Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of the Confederacy, Military Order of Stars and Bars, the Magna Charta Barons, and the Society of Genealogists of London, England. Mr. Avery is survived by his wife of 48 years, Reba Miller Avery and children: Elizabeth; Lowell; John and Frances. He is survived by nine grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother, Joseph R. Avery, a very dear niece, Maria.
