Alexander was baptised at the Laigh Kirk, Stewarton on 4.12.1841, the first child of Alexander Brown, weaver, and Janet Kerr.

The Brown family immigrated to Canada in 1862.

Alexander married Margaret Neilson on 20.1.1865: Alexander (23) and Margaret (22), both living in Galt. They had four children: Helen 1865, Janet Kerr 1867, Alexander Henry 1870 and Winifred 1878.

In 1872, he co-founded the oldest lumber mill in Western Canada with Thomas Rutherford, trading as Brown & Rutherford. In 1879 the business expanded to manufacture lumber and they later purchased a steamboat and barges to move their goods. In 1911, they sold the Bannatyne site and built a mill and lumber yard in Point Douglas.

After Margaret's death in 1879, he married her sister Isabella the following year and they had one child: John Neilson 1882.
