Alexander married Margaret Neilson on 20.1.1865: Alexander (23) and Margaret (22), both living in Galt. They had four children: Helen 1865, Janet Kerr 1867, Alexander Henry 1870 and Winifred 1878.
In 1872, he co-founded the oldest lumber mill in Western Canada with Thomas Rutherford, trading as Brown & Rutherford. In 1879 the business expanded to manufacture lumber and they later purchased a steamboat and barges to move their goods. In 1911, they sold the Bannatyne site and built a mill and lumber yard in Point Douglas.
After Margaret's death in 1879, he married her sister Isabella the following year and they had one child: John Neilson 1882.
