The eight year old had never cooked a meal. She worried as mealtime approached and finally took utensils and ingredients to her mother's bedside. She always remembered that day when her dying mother taught her how to make biscuits. In fifteen years of marriage, Mary Catherine had nine children and buried five. She was laid to rest in the Fairlawn Cemetery near three of her babies, Clarence, Julian and Mavis. In time, headstones at graves around them were inscribed with surnames of their neighbors listed in the 1910 census. James William sent the four surviving children by train to his parents in New Mexico and he soon followed.
