Hall of Fame Professional Football Player. Born David D. Jones, he was a 14th-round draft pick in 1961 out of Mississippi Valley State by the Los Angeles Rams, where he spent his first 11 seasons, teaming up with Merlin Olsen, Rosey Grier and Lamar Lundy to form "The Fearsome Foursome", one of the most famous defensive lines in National Football League history. The Rams' stats show Jones with 159 1/2 sacks for them and 173 1/2 for his career, and he was the first defensive lineman with 100 solo tackles, reaching that mark in 1967. He played for the Rams until 1971 and then played for the San Diego Chargers for two seasons before finishing his career with the Washington Redskins in 1974. During his NFL career, he was selected to seven consecutive Pro Bowls with the Rams from 1964 to 1970 and made eight overall, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980 and made the league's 75th anniversary all-time squad. Jones, who also was one of the most durable players, missing just five games in his 14 pro seasons, died of natural causes.
