Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 63rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. As a Major, he commanded the regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg, where on the Second Day of the engagement (July 2, 1863) it was part of Major General Daniel E. Sickles' unauthorized movement of the Army of the Potomac's III Corps from Cemetery Ridge to the Emmitsburg Road. There it fought across from the famed Peach Orchard, and it's battle location is marked with a monument that is inscribed with Colonel Danks's name.
