Julian was sixth of the nine children of James William McDonald and Mary Catherine Bilderback McDonald. Oklahoma was still Indian Territory when he was born. He was the fourth of his siblings that died as infants and the second of the family to be buried in what is now Fairlawn Cemetery. By 1912, one more little sibling, Mavis, and his mother would be buried near his grave.
