Clarence was fourth of the nine children of James William McDonald and Mary Catherine Bilderback McDonald. He was born soon after the family arrived from Texas. Oklahoma was still Indian Territory and had been opened for homesteading. He was the third of his siblings that did not live long and the first of the family to be buried in what is now Fairlawn Cemetery. By 1912, two more little siblings and his mother would be buried near his grave.
