Mavis is the seventh of the nine children of James William McDonald and Mary Catherine Bilderback McDonald. Oklahoma was still a territory when she was born. Mavis did not survive infancy and was buried in Fairlawn Cemetery near her infant brothers, Clarence and Julian. Her mother was buried by her little ones in 1911. An older sister, Thelma Vester McDonald Snider had memories of little Mavis.
