Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served as Colonel and commander of the 85th Illinois Volunteer Infantry during most of the Civil War. He served conspicuously during Major General William T. Sherman's campaign for Atlanta, Georgia in 1864, being wounded at the Battle of Jonesboro on August 31 - September 1, 1864. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services at the battle of Atlanta, Ga". He resumed his occupation of lawyer after the war and was Attorney General of the state of Nebraska from 1879 until 1882. (bio by: Thomas Fisher)
