Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was the commanding oficer of the 25th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during most of the Civil War. He lost his right arm at the Battle of Decatur during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign on July 22, 1864. After the war, he was awarded Brevet Brigadier General, USV, on March 13, 1865, for gallant and meritorious services during the campaign in Georgia and the Carolinas. After the war he resumed his career as a lawyer.
