In 1943, he became a Commander of the Bath, was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, and was appointed to the Command of the 4th. Division of the British North African Forces. Just before his death, he was knighted. The quotation on his gravestone is from Psalm 39, Verse 7: "And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee."
