Historian. Although he is best known for his participation and commentary in Ken Burns' landmark 1990 "Civil War" television documentary, he had received previous acclaim for his three-volume "Civil War" history of the conflict (published in 1974), and six historical novels, especially the work "Shiloh," published in 1952. He served in the United States Army during World War II, and worked as a journalist before he launched his writing career. He died at age 88 in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee.
