Ssgt. Chad M. Mercer of Waycross, Georgia was a native of and lived most of his life in Waycross. He was an unforgettable person with his impressive knowledge of the military and for the love of his wife Pam and his three children. In high school he was on the competitive rifle team. Chad enlisted in the Army National Guard in March 1998 so he could get a scholarship to Georgia Military College, graduating in 2000. As a civilian, he was employed at a hardware store. He won honors as the top noncommissioned officer in the 4,400-member brigade in 2004 for his encyclopedic knowledge of military matters. He served in Bosnia in 2001 and began a yearlong combat tour in Iraq in May. The National Guard Honor Guard performed full Military Rites with a special presentation of medals and commendation from the President of the United States to the Mercer family. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Mack Mercer. He was 25.
