Crimean War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Nottingham, England, he served as a Private in the 2nd Battalion, Prince Consort Rifle Birgade, British Army. On April 22, 1855, a Russian rifle squad was situated among the rocks overhanging the Woronzoff Road, Crimea. Private Humpston with another Private on their own attacked and captured the position which was of great importance. For most prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he and awarded the Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria in Hyde Park on the June 26, 1857. He died at the age of 52 at his home in Nottingham, England.
