Second Boer War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Middelburg, Cape Colony, South Africa, he served as a Corporal in the Rimington's Guides in the South African British Forces. During actions at near Strijdenburg, South Africa, on February 24, 1900, Corporal Clements was seriously wounded along with a few other men by the attacking Boers and ordered to surrender. He threw himself into of a party of five Boers, shooting three of them with his revolver and caused the whole enemy party to surrender and saved his wounded comrades. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on June 4, 1901. During World War I, he also served as a Sergeant in the British Army. He died at age 54 in Newcastle, South Africa.
