Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Montefiascone, Giovanni Mauri initially had in mind to sit for a jurisprudence course, but the death of a priest brother of his made him join the Order of Preachers at the Santuario della Quercia of Viterbo. Receiving the religious name of Egidio, he studied theology for three years at Santa Sabina in Rome, completing his course at the named Quercia Sanctuary. Soon after ordination on September 24, 1853 in Viterbo, he was named master of novices and lector of Sacred Scripture. In 1858, he was appointed prior of Noto, Sicily, and two years later of Santa Sabina, Rome. Moving back to Quercia as lector, earning his masters in theology, he was named prior of the Dominican priory of Düsseldorf. Vicar general of his Order at the convent of San Marco of Florence, at 43 years of age he was elected bishop of the Diocese of Rieti, receiving his episcopal consecration at the chapel of the Dominican Convent of Quercia on January 14, 1872. Transferred to the see of Osimo e Cingoli on June 1, 1888, he was promoted to the archepiscopal see of Ferrara, June 12, 1893. Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of May 18, 1894, with the title of San Bartolomeo all'Isola. On December 2 of the following year, he opted for title of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, vacated with the death of Cardinal González y Díaz Tuñón, likewise a member of the Order of Preachers. The Cardinal passed away in Ferrara on March 13, 1896, at 00.02 am., having received extreme unction the previous day, after a long battle with diabetes complicated by a severe attack of influenza, and was laid to rest, sealed in three caskets, at the Certosa Cemetery of the city.
