Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Liverpool, England, he served as a Private in the 10th Regiment of Foot, British Army. At Benares, India, on June 4, 1857, Private Kirk along with two others volunteered to rescue the Pension Paymaster Captain Brown and his family. At great risk, he went in the compound of the family's bungalow that was surrounded by rebels and succeeded the rescue. For daring gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on January 20, 1860.
